The Buffalo nickel or Indian Head nickel is a copper-nickel five-cent piece that was struck by the United States Mint from 1913 to 1938. It was designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser. The obverse depicts a Native American with the legend liberty. The reverse shows an American bison with united states of america and e pluribus unum above and five cents below. The reverse was modified to prevent wear during the first year, removing the mound on which the bison stood.
